Sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) are transmitted through sexual contact. There are several different types of STI’s. Most sexually transmitted infections are treatable with antibiotics, however there are some that are not. Protecting yourself from infection is recommended as some STIs can cause pelvic inflammatory disease or neurological complications. The best way to protect yourself from STI’s is by using barrier protection (condoms) during all intimate encounters, and by communicating and discussing your sexual history with your partner. It is also wise to make sure that both you and your partner are tested for infections prior to any sexual encounter.
