Screening Tests / Exams When You Need Them

Mammograms:

It is recommended that you start screening breast cancer screening at age 40. It is recommended to repeat this exam every 1-2 years from age 40-50 years, then every year after age 50 until at least age 75. You may have certain risk factors in your family history that may make you a good candidate for early screening. Please check with your provider to see if this is necessary for you. 

Papanicolaou:

It is recommended that you start screening for cervical cancer at age 21. It is now recommended to have this screening test every 3-5 years depending on your age group as long as your results continue to be normal. However, if your screening results show abnormal results, your provider may recommend that you be seen in closer intervals. 

Colonoscopy:

It is recommended that you start screening for colon cancer at the age of 45. You may possess certain family history risk factors that may indicate that you be screened sooner than the recommended age. Please check with your provider to see if this is necessary for you. 

There is currently no screening test for ovarian cancer or uterine cancer. If you notice any alarming symptoms it is recommended that you make an appointment with your provider for a physical exam and pelvic ultrasound.  

Bone density scan:

It is recommended to start screening for osteoporosis at age 65. If you have a strong family history of brittle bones or a personal history of fractures then it might be indicated for you to test sooner. 

Blood pressure:

You should be screened for Blood pressure every 2 years after age 40. A blood pressure above 120 systolic and 80 diastolic.

Cholesterol screening:

The recommended age for cholesterol testing is 45. And its recommended to repeat the test every 5 years.

Diabetes screening:

This screening test is recommended at age 45 and you should have this screening test every 3 years. If you are obese it is recommended that you start screening for diabetes at age 35.

Thyroid disorders:

It is recommended that you start screening for thyroid disease at age 35.
